Why Not Ask?

John 14:12-14 reads: 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Intimidating words.

God specifically tells us several time in the Bible to ask him for things.  Jesus tells us in John 14:12-14 to ask in HIS name and He will give it to us so that GOD WILL BE GLORIFIED.  So then why don’t we ask Him?

When we are feeling terrible, or we desperately need help in our lives, we go to other sinful humans for advice.  Sometimes they can help you, but they cannot change you and give you what you truly need.  So why would we ask sinful people for advice and help when the perfect and all knowing God tells us that we can ask Him whenever we need to?

I believe that God scares us.  Since he is so perfect and so holy, we feel very inferior and worthless compared to him.  Truth is, we are nothing compared to God and his holiness.  That is the great thing about our God though.  Even though we are so imperfect, He wants us.  His love for us is that incredible!  He wants us to ask him for things.  I honestly think we dishonour God by choosing Him as our last source of help.

God wants to help you and when you don’t let Him because you feel so worthless, I believe that he feels sad.  After all of the times he tells us to ask him, we chose something else for a solution, and that solution is never perfect.

Let me put it this way.  You would never go to have a shower when you are feeling very clean.  You go to have a shower when you are dirty.  God is the same way.  He wants us to come to him when we are in need.  What would be the purpose for God’s help if we weren’t in need?  That is why I believe that we dishonour Him when we do not go to him for help.

It’s important that you know this.  Not just as a nice Christian saying, but as a truth to work through.  God cares for you.

He will never be forceful and tell you to ask Him for help.  He is patient and will never do anything to harm you.  Never feel like you don’t deserve His help.  He wants to help you because he loves you.  All that you have to do is ask him and He will help you.

All we need to do is ask.

  1. What a wonderful article that speaks straight from your heart to mine. Thank you for your insight into God’s love for us. I’m going to start ASKING Him for what I need. 😉

  2. Thank you so much for writing this, I feel it truly has impacted my thinking. I would often not want to ask for his help all the time or for the little things because I was afraid that they weren’t important enough to bother him with. I had never really pictured God WAITING for us to ask him for things or for help. I just figured he was there doing other things then would help when we needed it. Thanks again, this really has helped me a bunch 🙂

  3. No problem Jenna. I am very glad that this could help you. 🙂
