It destroys marriages, ruins lives, and fulfills unrealistic expectations. Many people struggle with pornography. Of course its not the most talked about topic of the town, no one wants to openly say, “yes, I struggle with porn.” because when you do, people give you that look.
That ‘um alright. Your weird…’ look. For five years I didn’t tell anyone I wrestled with pornography because I was extremely ashamed. It all started when I was nine years old with a curious mind and a world full of wrong answers at my fingertips. Once I realized what I was doing was wrong I immediately said “never again” but here I am five years later still saying that same phrase. Every time I try to tell someone I start to cry, I can’t help it.
When I was at camp this summer, one of our nightly devotions was about wearing a mask. The speaker talked about how everyday we’re forced to put on a mask and never talk about our problems to the world. Some day you have to take that mask off and say, “hey, this is who I am and this is what I’m going through.” Every time someone brings it up you deny it like everyone else, because you couldn’t bear let your secret out. There and then I broke down.
I had to tell someone.
They prayed for me.
All that sin, and shame was gone. I felt light. I still screw up and its still hard for me talk about it, but I know Jesus will always take me back.
Pornography puts so much shame on your shoulders. You feel like your world is crashing down when your alone. You can slowly feel your relationship with God dwindling. You don’t know how to cure it; you’ve tried. Reading the Bible, listening to Christian music, going to church, they do nothing but make you feel even more shameful.
To get rid of this shame, guilt, oppression, you need to tell someone. God believes in community for this reason. Tell someone you know will be there for you and comfort you. Ask them to pray for your shame and guilt. I promise you will feel 100% better. It won’t get any easier from there, in fact, it’ll be so hard but you can do it. Ask God for strength and he will provide it to you.
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Phillipians 4:13
Don’t give up. Jesus will take all your shame and guilt. That’s why He died on the cross, so you could be set free of this. He sets me free. He can set you free too.
