Out of all the Ten Commandments, you would think that the one that states “You shall have no others gods before Me” would be pretty easy, right? I mean I don’t have a golden calf in my bedroom whom I pray to every day. So I’m pretty good at keeping this commandment, right?
I don’t think we realize how many idols we actually have in our life and don’t get idol mixed up with a role model.
I had a dance teacher once tell our class that her niece was obsessed with Katy Perry. She had all her albums, her walls were covered with Katy Perry posters and she even dressed like her! Personally, I find that kind of scary.
I’m sure this girl isn’t the only one placing an idol in her life. The sad truth is that I’m sure most of us can think of a time that we “worshiped” something over God. Money, actors, singers and electronics all seem to be some “big” ones.
Even your feelings can become gods if we allow them to take control of us.
We need to ask ourselves this question: “Who or what are we focusing more of our energy on? God or something else?”
Matthew 6:19-21:“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
This Bible verse has such a great meaning to it. I think it’s important to look at it this way: The “idols” in our own lives are only temporary. They will only give us temporary satisfaction. However, God cannot be stolen or broken. What He gives us in the end if we continue to follow Him is beyond anything we can ever imagine and it lasts forever, and I think that’s pretty amazing.
God is way way way far above anything else that we would ever want to worship. Even though it may not be obvious, I invite you to look over your own life so Jesus can be your one, true God.
