Even When I Cannot See

One night I dreamed a dream.

As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.

Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.

For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,

One belonging to me and one to my Lord.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me,

I looked back at the footprints in the sand.

I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,

especially at the very lowest and saddest times,

there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.

“Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,

You’d walk with me all the way.

But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,

there was only one set of footprints.

I don’t understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me.”

He whispered, “My precious child, I love you and will never leave you

Never, ever, during your trials and testings.

When you saw only one set of footprints,

It was then that I carried you.”

How often do we think that God has abandoned us? Far too often; those are the times we need to open our eyes and see. God’s right there. He has always been.

In Deuteronomy 31:6 is says that God will never leave you nor forsake you. But sometimes I think we forsake Him. Set Him aside. We say, “Oh I will spend time praying and reading my Bible later, I don’t want to do that right now.” Well what if eventually it’s too late.

God wants to be in a partnership with you, to walk with you. He has a bountiful amount of blessings and opportunities that He wants to pour out on you, His child. But often, we get caught up in our own lives we miss that. We run. Until we hit rock bottom. That’s when God asks us, “Can we get back to business now?” He knows we need Him, that’s why His Son died for us! How can we even think, that the God whose Son laid down His life, in love for us, doesn’t care about us? It’s insane!

The other day, God totally blessed me with a moment that just amazed me. My parents are renewing their vows this summer, and they want to have a dance after. Now neither of them can dance. So, they are taking lessons. I don’t have time to go to the lessons with them, so I just pick up the steps while they are practicing at home. The other evening, I was dancing the swing with my dad; we were practicing the cuddle step. Now, this is the cool part. For that step, the guy turns you around so you’re leaning into his shoulder. Leaning. Unfortunately, I’m not to great at the turns yet and I loose my balance. However, even though I lost my balance and totally lost my footing, since I was leaning into my dad, I didn’t fall over. I could just lean into his arms and he would hold me up, then he swings me back out and we keep dancing. I though this was so amazing, because that experience is what God does! We’ll be dancing along, and then loose our balance. Then He catches us, holds us until we get our footing and then we keep going. That was a total God moment, and such a good reminder and encouragement — God is always there!

He holds us when we need Him, when we hit rock bottom and can’t keep our balance. We can lean into Him, trust him to take care of us. And He will. I experienced this while I was dancing with my dad, and it was such a beautiful reminder.

We can walk by faith, even when we cannot see. When we are drained and weary, God is still there.
