Peace. Rest. Contentment. How often can we claim those emotions? Can we even go for a day without getting riled up about something?
For me, the chances are unlikely. I have good days, yes. I have bad days too. But sometimes when someone ticks me off or something has me on edge, I get upset — I’ll wager we all do. But are you going to let your anger destroy your peace?
We have conflict within ourselves just as we have conflict with each other. We’re humans and that’s the way we work. But we need to be able to resolve the conflict; hopefully, in a peaceful manner.
But here’s another question: when you feel like your world is falling apart, when the world we live in seems to crumble into pieces, how do you feel? When nothing makes sense and you feel like you have every right to mope around, do you? Because I know in the times when my world starts to spin way too fast for me — I rely on the Lord. I lean on Him, and He gives me strength. He gives me peace.
Philippians 4:4-7 says:
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The peace that surpasses all understanding. Ok, um, don’t you want that? I do. Imagine an overflowing sense of peace that rests with you, no matter what difficulty you face. But you don’t have to imagine it — God grants it! Life isn’t easy, but God is always there for us to lean on, He sustains us. And when I feel like a mess, I ask God to fill me with His peace, and He does. Then, my problems don’t matter so much.
I believe in the God who made the earth, He makes the breath-taking sunsets and sets the stars in the sky at night. When I feel His presence in the awe of mountains, I know He walks with me every day no matter what I’ve done. I believe in the God of miracles. I believe in the God who helps me in my times of need. I believe in our loving God. I believe in the One and Only God, the God of peace.
I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
8 The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.
When I need answers, or when I simply need assurance that indeed God loves me and that my help comes from Him, I go sit outside and watch the evening sky. As I gaze at the stars and talk with God, His promised peace comes and rests on my heart. It’s in that moment, that I know my God cares for me, and everyday of my life He will walk with me –through the mountains and the valleys.
