The Impact of Music

Now, by this title some people already are sighing and rolling their eyes. Don’t feel bad about it! I love music just as much as anyone reading this article. I could listen for hours just enjoying the beautiful art that people have made that pump me up before a sports game, calm me down after one, help me study or purely for enjoyment. Music is everywhere whether you like it or not and you tastes of music change just as the popular style does as well. Because of this, new “popular” songs and artists are being played everywhere. This leads me to wonder, what are the messages in popular songs?

Most artists explicity talk about sex, drugs, and women like objects. I often wonder how these things can be in any way helpful in the development of young adults and teens. To get a better look at the messages popular songs, I randomly chose a song off the billboard 100. This site numbers the most popular songs by the number of listens daily. I scrolled down to the third one and clicked. These are the lyrics in the extremely popular song “Gucci Gang” by Lil Pump.

Gucci Gang, ooh, yeah, Lil Pump, yeah, Gucci Gang, ooh
Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang
Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang (Gucci gang!)
Spend ten racks on a new chain
My ***** love do cocaine, ooh
I **** a *****, I forgot her name
I can’t buy a ***** no wedding ring
Rather go and buy Balmains
Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang (Gucci gang!)
Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang
Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang (Gucci gang!)
Spend ten racks on a new chain
My ***** love do cocaine, ooh
I **** a *****, I forgot her name, yeah
I can’t buy no ***** no wedding ring
Rather go and buy Balmains, aye
Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang
My lean cost more than your rent, ooh
Your mama still live in a tent, yeah
Still slanging
My lean cost more than your rent, ooh
Your mama still live in a tent, yeah
Still slanging dope in the jets, huh
Me and my grandma take meds, ooh
None of this **** be new to me
******* my teacher, call it tutory
Bought some red bottoms, cost hella Gs
**** your airline, **** your company
*****, your breath smell like some cigarettes
I’d rather **** a ***** from the projects
They kicked me out the plane off a Percocet
Now Lil Pump fly a private jet
Everybody screaming “**** West Jet!”
Lil Pump still sell that meth
Hunnid on my wrist sippin on Tech
**** a lil *****, make her ***** wet
Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang
Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang (Gucci gang!)
Spend ten racks on a new chain
My ***** love do cocaine, ooh
I **** a *****, I forgot her name
I can’t buy a ***** no wedding ring
Rather go and buy Balmains
Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang (Gucci gang!)
Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang
Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang (Gucci gang!)
Spend ten racks on a new chain
My ***** love do cocaine, ooh
I **** a *****, I forgot her name
I can’t buy no ****** no wedding ring
Rather go and buy Balmains, aye
Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang
As you can see from this song, it is ABSOLUTE garbage. It’s poison. It just so happens that the messages in this song are that women are only good for sex, drugs are totally fine to do. These messages may not make you instantly want to go and smoke weed or anything, but I think that they still have an impact on people life. It may not be much, but I think that continuing to listen to music that honours sin and evil can “numb” your attitude toward evil. Maybe you will be a little more inclined to indulge in sinful actions or maybe you wouldn’t think that certain things are as wrong as they are.
Now, this isn’t all music and if you do choose to listen to this kind of music, it’s your choice. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad person or that you agree with all that’s said. But I strongly encourage you to just look at the lyrics in the songs on your playlist. I guarantee that you would be surprised about some of the things that are said.
A phrase that has really impacted me and the choices I make, it “Garbage in, Garbage out.” Although it’s a little cliché, I think there is a powerful message to be learned from this. How can you expect to be loving, caring, respectful and generous when all you are dong is feeding your spirit lust, greed, hate and disrespect. With all these negative traits, how can you serve the Lord? I will close with thibible verse really backs my thoughts and adds truth to this whole topic. Jesus says:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:2
