Encounter Thursday: Love

The world has a lot wrong with it. Rape, stealing, murder, slavery- if it’s not one thing it’s another. Have you ever turned on the news, seen all the horrible things that go on and just want to shut it all out? I have. More than once.
We are so mean to each other. People take advantage of each other every change they get.

Why?
Because they can.

An issue close to my heart is human trafficking. Unthinkable acts towards little girls and boys is what really breaks my heart. It makes me so hopelessly upset that sometimes I lean on the edge of despair.
People are so cruel to each other and everyone thinks they`re justified. If it`s not ISIS it`s Al-Qaeda if it`s not Al-Qaeda it`s Boko Haram. People are gunning each other down and bombing each other to bits as a write this in nearly every corner of the world. It makes me want to give up.

Just throw in the towel, what can you do?

But.

I`ve tried giving up before and it hasn`t worked very well. I`ve tried giving up on people, on goodness, on the hope of a better world but call me an optimist, I always get pulled back into believing.

Why?

Because there`s still love out there.

A few nights ago I got the opportunity to listen to some people who work for the International Justice Mission. They`ve devoted their lives to combating evil. Because of IJM over 21000 people have been liberated from injustice and slavery. These people spend their days working in some of the worst places on Earth.

Why?

Because they can. Because love liberates.

Despair is easy. Sin makes our world dark and steals the hope from our hearts. Evil creeps in and tries to convince people that they are not worthy of love and that they`re not worthy to love. So they hate and cause strife instead.

Amidst all the brokenness in our world, I hold on to one weapon. I can still love. I can still liberate. You can still love. You can still be liberated.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then and do not let yourself be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. [Galatians 5:1]
