Picture this: you’re stuck in a bad habit. A bad, sinful habit. It happens to us all, doesn’t it? We find ourselves getting sucked deeper and deeper into sin, with seemingly no way out. We feel ashamed, not wanting to pray to God for fear that he won’t forgive us, fear that our sins are too great for Him.
However, there is no reason to think this: God is bigger than all of our sins, and once we ask Him for forgiveness, it’s done. He does not judge you for it, He does not remember it, nor does He hold it against you. He blots out our sin so that to Him, it was never there. In Psalms, David writes, “as far as the East is from the West, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” (Psalm 103:12)
As humans, we remember wrongs people have done against us. We hold grudges, and we always seem to recall something wrong someone has done to us in the past. But, God calls us to forgive others just like He has forgiven us.
In Matthew 18:21-25, Jesus tells the story of a servant who owes his master – the king – a small fortune that he is not able to pay. The servant begs the king for forgiveness, and the king forgives. Later, the same servant found a man who owed him much less than he first owed the king, and he demanded to be paid back. The man begs him to give him a little more time, but the servant refuses to give him any. The servant demands that he be thrown into jail. Some of his fellow servants saw what happened, and they were outraged! They took him to the king, and the king was also extremely mad. He gives the servant a harsh lecture and threw him into jail.
This parable is meant to symbolize our relationship with God. We are the servants, and God is the king. He is willing and ready to forgive us, which is why we should forgive others. We need to look to the perfect Holy God for our example. He forgives without thinking twice, without wondering whether or not He wants to forgive us. No matter what your situation, Jesus will always be waiting for you with open arms.
Now that brings us to an important question that most people have asked before: how do I ask for forgiveness? There’s may be many right ways, but they all boil down to this: ask, and it will be given to you. Confess what you have done wrong, and tell God that you are sorry and want to change. Ask Him to help you fix what is broken, and believe that He will help and forgive you.
One of the devil’s most powerful tools against us is doubt: doubt that God has forgiven us, doubt that He will help us. However, once you ask God, it will be done! You have to believe that God will do what He says He will do. Ask for forgiveness from your sins today, and you will be forgiven.
Because He is patient. He is kind. And He forgives.
